Embroidering Socks

Socks are a fun item to embroider, but also tricky. First, select a design that is really small. Next, figure out how much the sock cuff will be stretched when wearing so you can embroider it that way. With the sock cuff in the stretched position, place two straight pins 1 inch apart (they will be closer together when the sock relaxes).

Hoop the stabilizer. You can use a sticky stabilizer or you can use a cutaway and pin the sock into place. For cuffed socks, turn the sock so that the edge of the cuff will be below the design. As you pin (or stick) the sock to the stabilizer, stretch it so that the pins from step one will be 1 inch apart. Pin the rest of the sock out of the way. Mark the center of the design with another pin (step 5).

Embroider each design (they don't have to both be the same!). Take care that the presser foot does not catch on the pins as you move to center each design, and remove the pin that marks the center before embroidering. Stitch. Unpin. Remove excess stabilizer.

You can also buy a sock hoop, which is made to hold the bulk of the sock out of the way.
