Should You Re-Size? |
|
You find a design that is perfect for your next project, but it is too big to too small. Can you re-size the design? There are lots of programs that re-size embroidery designs. How well do they work? The answer has more to do with the design than the software. If you are starting with a simple design that has plain fills, the design will likely re-size just fine. If the design has lots of stitches that the designer has positioned one-by-one, the re-sizing software may not be able to make sense of the design, and the result may include gaps, dense areas, uneven stitches and distorted outlines. The only way to know for sure is to try, then test-stitch the design. The less you re-size, the better. An increase or decrease of 10% should work well enough with most any design. Trying to double the size or reduce it by half probably will not work as well. Even if the re-sizing works perfectly, the design may stitch fine but still not look right. When you reduce a design, the details become more pronounced; when you enlarge a design, the details may not be enough. You can compensate for this by using a finer thread for details on a reduced design, and by stitching the details twice on an enlarged design. Next issue: custom designs |
