Changing Needles

When I was a little girl, I was taught to use a needle until it broke. That thrifty rule does not apply well to machine embroidery. With sewing, as long as the stitches hold things together, they do not need to be pretty (except for topstitching). With embroidery, the needle is moving much faster than with sewing. A dull needle will not pierce the fabric efficiently and that will affect the stitch quality.

Buy needles in bulk so that you won't mind throwing away the dull ones. If there is a problem with the stitching, first try cleaning the bobbin area, cleaning the upper thread path, then re-threading the machine. Be sure that the thread runs smoothly from spool to machine. If the stitches still look lumpy or loopy, change the needle. Be sure the size of the needle matches your thread and that the type of needle matches your fabric (more on this tomorrow).

SUPERIOR Titanium-Coated
Needles for Home Machines

Superior Threads and Organ Needle
Company have applied the latest
technology of titanium-coated needles
to the Topstitch style for home machines.
These new titanium-coated needles have
an ultra thin coat of titanium nitride layered
on the surface to extend their productive life
by five to eight times that of conventional
needles. Most professionals recommend
changing the needle every project or, if you
count, every 8 hours. Imagine having a
needle that will last 40 to 60 hours
!
