Changing Needles |
|
When I was a little girl, I was taught
to use a needle until it broke. That thrifty rule does not apply well to
machine embroidery. With sewing, as long as the stitches hold things
together, they do not need to be pretty (except for topstitching). With
embroidery, the needle is moving much faster than with sewing. A dull
needle will not pierce the fabric efficiently and that will affect the
stitch quality.
Buy needles in bulk so that you won't mind throwing away the dull ones. If there is a problem with the stitching, first try cleaning the bobbin area, cleaning the upper thread path, then re-threading the machine. Be sure that the thread runs smoothly from spool to machine. If the stitches still look lumpy or loopy, change the needle. Be sure the size of the needle matches your thread and that the type of needle matches your fabric (more on this tomorrow). Next issue: the right needle |
