Embroidering a Sweater |
|
You can embroider a sweater. If the knit is a very fine gauge, treat it like any other knit. Use a soft cut-away stabilizer, pin the garment to the stabilizer or use a sticky cut-away (or spray adhesive). Do not hoop the sweater, as this might leave hoop marks or cause the knit to stretch or distort. Pin a layer of water-soluble stabilizer (WSS) on top to keep the stitches from sinking into the surface of the knit. If you are embroidering on a bulkier knit, use tulle (very fine netting) on top instead of WSS. After embroidering, tear away any excess WSS or tulle. Select a design that is not too dense, as this will affect the drape of the sweater knit. A redwork design stitched with a 12-weight thread will be bold without stiffness. Appliqué is another great choice. A scattering of miniature designs works well. Not sure? Experiment on an old sweater that you were ready to throw away, or one that has been outgrown.
