Save That Thread |
|
Thread can age poorly if not properly
protected. Keep off the dust by storing in an air-tight container (such
as a fishing lure box) or by wrapping each spool with clear vinyl. You
can buy Hugo's Amazing Tape, which is a 2-3/8" wide strip of clear
vinyl on a roll, or you can cut your own strips from thin vinyl
purchased at the fabric store. The vinyl wraps around the thread spool,
then the end clings to the vinyl, making the strips reusable. The vinyl
has a bit of stretch, which helps the wrap to hold tightly, but after a
few years, it may lose it's stretch and you will need a fresh wrap. If
you cut the end with pinking shears, it will be easier to find the end
when you want to unwrap the spool.
You also need to shield rayon, cotton or solar-active threads from sunlight to prevent fading. Store these threads in a drawer or box. If you live in a very dry climate, or if your house is dry in the winter, your rayon thread may become brittle. Some have had success re-hydrating old thread by sealing it in a plastic baggie, then placing it in the freezer overnight. Others have found this process to be useless, but it couldn't hurt to try!
