CDs are Not Forever |
|
Before CDs, we had to rely on floppy
disks, which were easily damaged by heat or magnets. We thought CDs
would last forever. But CDs can go bad. Protect the surface from smudges
and scratches. Never touch the face of the CD. Hold it by the edges,
with one finger in the hole. Store it inside a protective sleeve, jewel
box or CD case. If the surface acquires smudges, use a special cloth
made just for cleaning CDs.
The other problem with CDs is that they can warp. Every time you press the CD into the CD player or jewel case, you push on the center. Over time, this can change the shape of the CD enough that it can no longer be read. Be gentle and your CD will last longer. Make back-up copies. It is usually okay to make a copy for your personal use (not to give to Aunt Emily or Cousin Sue). Read the fine print to be sure. Next issue: save that thread |
