When You Write

Whether you are posting on a forum, an email list (such as a Yahoo Group) or sending a private email, pay attention to the niceties.

Choose a subject line that best describes your question or comment. Instead of "looking for...", try "skiing Santa needed". You will save everyone else a little time, and you will be better able to pinpoint responses. If you are replying to a message, but the focus has changed from the original subject line, change the subject line to something more appropriate. If you receive emails from a group in digest form, be sure to change the subject line of your responses.

Start your message with a greeting, such as "Hi, Friends!" or "Dear Embroiderers". If your message is a response to someone else's question, or you are sending a private email, address the person by name. It's friendlier.

If you are replying to an email, and your email is set to include the entire post to which you are replying, be polite and delete all or most of that post. You might include just enough to provide a frame of reference. Or you can word your response so that the question is implied. For example, if someone wants to know where to find in-the-hoop coasters, instead of replying "Moose B Stitchin has them", you could write "Moose B Stitchin has in-the-hoop coasters."

If your message includes a website name, include the URL. Test the URL first by copying it into your browser to be sure it is correct.

Conclude each message with a signature. It can be as simple as a screen name ("Fuzzy Feet"), or your real name, and possibly your email address and website URL (if you have one).
