Mixing Threads |
|
Do you have an assortment of polyester, rayon and cotton threads? Have you ever wondered if it is okay to mix them? Yes! In a particular design, you may want some elements to have the luster of rayon and other elements to be less shiny (cotton thread). If you are using rayon thread, but you only have black polyester, go ahead and use the polyester. It will be okay.
Small details can even be stitched with ordinary sewing thread (if the
color is too perfect to pass up), but do not stitch fill areas or even
satin stitches with sewing thread. You will not get the coverage and the
thread is more likely to shred than embroidery thread.
My personal preference is for the sheen of rayon. I think polyester has a more plastic look, so I avoid polyester for most uses. But the black rayon thread can be testy, and the black poly runs smoothly every time. Most designs look best if you use a single type of thread, but using the best colors is even more important, so don't be afraid to mix it up. Your bobbin thread can be poly or cotton, no matter what thread you use on top. I like to use cotton bobbins in a color to match the top thread. The fill colors look more even with a matching color in the bobbin. Next issue: special effects from Mary Jane Allen of Perfect Little Stitches |
