Choosing Fabrics for Appliqué

The joy of appliqué is that the print quickly add lots of detail to a design without adding lots of stitches. In most cases, a small print will work best to convey a design element such as a shirt or tablecloth. Experiment with larger prints to see if capturing a small portion will create the effect you want. Cut a small window in a piece of cardboard and place it over the fabric to see how the print looks. A bit of tie-dye becomes a rainbow trout or marbled fabric becomes water, flames or grass. A solid fabric is better for really small elements or for areas that have details stitched over them. If you keep your scraps sorted by dominant color, you will find the perfect fabric in no time!
