Water-Soluble Plastic Films |
|
Note: The following details all emanate from the Floriani brand of stabilizers but note that the majority of the information given also applies to other brands. This particular type of water-soluble stabilizer is called Water-Soluble Topping by the Floriani Company and should be used as a topping only. There was a time when the only water-soluble stabilizer available to embroider lace was the water-soluble plastic films but as time goes by, stabilizers also get better. Instead of using 2, 3 or 4 layers of plastic water-soluble stabilizer and have the hardest time washing it out, one can now save time and money by using the fibrous water-soluble stabilizers which offer better stability for a single layer. As a topping, only one layer of the water-soluble plastic film is necessary and it will ensure that the stitches wrap properly into the project. A great example: when stitching on canvas or denim, the weave of the fabric tends to take over on how the stitches will wrap and why we get unevenness in our stitches. The topping helps the stitches fall in place as they were meant to. Beware of the old and common misconception that this type of stabilizer makes lace making less expensive. It might be cheaper by the yard but if you have to use 3 or 4 layers of it, your cost per yard has now tripled or quadrupled. Next issue: fibrous water-soluble stabilizers |
