Water-Soluble Stabilizers

Marie of My Embroidery Haven presents this series of articles about water-soluble stabilizer.

We've all at one time or another had a design stitched out on water-soluble stabilizer that didn't come out as it should have. Why is that? This week we will cover some of the reasons why a stitch out might not come out right.

One of the most common reasons is the stabilizer is slipping in the hoop. Most designs stitched out on water soluble stabilizers are lace designs. Lace designs, because of their intricacy, demand precision. A great designer will make every effort in his or her digitizing to leave room for error to ensure the best stitch out possible for the embroiderer. But even then, the stabilizer cannot slip in the hoop at all. It doesn't take much at all for stitches to land a tenth of a millimetre out of place and many times, it's all it takes for stitches not to connect and have the stitched out piece ruined when the stabilizer is dissolved. (For those of you wondering how big a tenth of a millimetre is it’s literally a hair!) Note: Water-soluble plastic films are affected by humidity and heat and tend to stretch as the stitching goes on. Choosing a fibrous water-soluble will offer more stability.

Wet N Gone by Floriani, by far the most enjoyable
fibrous water-soluble stabilizer. One layer is more than
enough for the great majority of our projects. It rinses
out in cool to warm water in a manner of seconds.
Each remnants can be reused in various ways.
Once we try it, we wonder why we ever wasted our
time and hard earned money on anything else before!

The Drawstring Bag
pattern comes in two
sizes, with lots of places
to embroider your
favorite designs.

Fall is going to be upon us before we
know it. These beautiful free standing
lace leaves stitch out beautifully
and can be strung together to make
trims or jewelry. The matching motifs
can be tacked to linens, an apron,
or slip into an envelope with a card.
Beautiful!

The Skeleton leaves are
wonderful stitched on a
sweatshirt.

Pick a few summer flowers,
scatter them in tiny places.
