Finding Stuff to Embroider |
|
You've got the perfect design, and now
you need a plain white blouse, or pale green t-shirt, or basic cotton
napkins, or a baby bib, or kitchen towel. Everything in the store seems
to be already embroidered or screen printed. Where do you find the
blanks?
For basic items, such as a baby bib, burp cloth, or napkins, shop at the fabric store and make your own. Bibs can also be made from plain hand towels. Diapers make great burp cloths. A small bath towel can be turned into a hooded baby bath towel (get the free pattern from the Perfect Little Stitches Project Page). There are wholesalers who specialize in clothing blanks for screen printers and commercial embroiderers. If you have a tax ID number, many will sell small quantities at very good prices. Wal-Mart usually has some blank items, but they are often hiding behind all those embellished ones. It's worth a little digging to find something blank. Craft stores carry blank tote bags, aprons and hats for all sorts of embellishing. They sometimes have kits for inserting cross stitch into plastic mugs, coasters and trivets, which work well for machine embroidery. Always be on the look out for blank items. Stock up, even before you have the perfect design or project idea. When inspiration strikes, you will be ready! Next issue: that new dog or cat from Mary Jane Allen of Perfect Little Stitches |
