Take a Break |
|
How long have you been sitting at the
computer? If it is more than an hour, you need to take a break. A small
break may mean just stretching your arms, focusing your eyes on the far
wall, rolling your shoulders and moving your neck all around to relieve
tension. A large break may mean taking a walk, fixing lunch or running a
few errands. Sitting in one position for too long, especially if you are
leaned slightly forward toward the computer, is very tiring on your
neck. Your eyes will also feel the strain if you keep them at the same
focus for too long.
If you feel a slight tingle in your neck, shoulders, wrist, thumb, elbow or shoulder, stop immediately to shake it out, then take a break (even though the tingle is gone). Adjust your chair so you are sitting comfortably with your feet flat on the floor. Your keyboard should be low enough that you do not hunch your shoulders when typing. Your monitor should be at eye level. If you spend long hours at the computer, consider buying furniture that will meet these needs, or adapt the furniture you have by shortening legs or placing the monitor on a stand (whatever works best to reduce strain). Likewise, your embroidery machine needs a break if you have been embroidering full tilt. If a single design takes more than an hour to stitch, stop stitching long enough to clean the bobbin area and check to be sure the needle is still tightly held. Either take note of your starting time, or use a kitchen timer to be sure you do not over do it. Next issue: pdf, txt, doc and jpg files from Mary Jane Allen of Perfect Little Stitches |
