Crisp and Clean

If you want your embroidery to have the look of perfection, you will need to follow two simple rules. The first rule is to iron the fabric before embroidering. Some fabrics may not be suitable for ironing (velvet, suede, vinyl, fiberglas screen), but iron anything you can. Those wrinkles are impossible to press out after you have embroidered them into place. If your fabric is lightweight (broadcloth, batiste and such), add a little spray starch to improve the stability of the fabric. Press with an up and down motion so as not to stretch the fabric. You will want to press again after embroidering to remove the hoop marks. If you have pre-washed the item, a little spray starch will restore that "never been washed" look.

The second rule is to keep food and drink away from your embroidery. It's okay to have a cup of coffee, but be mindful that the sleeve does not dip into the java, or that the hoop does not bump the mug. Be extremely careful with food. You don't want to stain that t-shirt before you are even finished embroidering. Be sure your hands are washed and free of any food before handling an embroidery project. And if you want to show your freshly embroidered item to a family member, don't let them touch it without first inspecting their hands. Think of each embroidery project as a work of art, to be treasured and protected, at least until the first time it can be worn.
