Tame the Towel Loopies |
|
If you embroider on a heavily napped
fabric (such as a terrycloth towel), you will need to use a topping to
keep the loopies from poking through the design. A water-soluble
stabilizer pinned on top of the terrycloth will hold the loops down
while stitching, but after a few washings, the loops may still work
their way through the threads. A better solution is to use tulle (a very
fine netting used in bridal wear). Find a color that matches the towel
(does not need to match perfectly). Use a single layer over the terry.
After embroidering, just tear away excess tulle. Any little bits left
behind should disappear right into the nap.
The tulle can also be used with velour, velvet, velveteen, fake fur or corduroy. You might also try an embossed design. These designs have stitches that will hold down the loopies, then the areas left unstitched are fluffy, creating an embossed effect. The designs can be stitched in a single color thread to match the towel, or try a shade darker for a tone-on-tone look. No topping is needed for an embossed design. The thicker and fluffier the towel, the more pronounced the embossed effect. Next issue: crisp and clean from Mary Jane Allen of Perfect Little Stitches |
