Why Use a Stabilizer? |
|
When I brought home my first
embroidery machine, I did not understand the point of using a
stabilizer. Hand embroidery does not require stabilizer, so why do I
need it for machine embroidery?
Embroidery machines stitch very quickly, which puts a lot of stress on the fabric as the stitches pull this way and that. If you ever tried to embroider a filled design without stabilizer, you soon saw the fabric distorting and pulling at the sides of the hoop. The stabilizer takes most of the strain off the fabric to keep distortion to a minimum. Stabilizer will also help to keep the embroidery design flat and pretty after laundering. There are exceptions. You do not need stabilizer if you are quilting in the hoop. You may use water-soluble stabilizer on very lightweight fabrics with open, lightweight designs, to make freestanding lace or on fiberglas screening. Even the best stabilizer can not make up for a poorly crafted design. If you have stabilized properly and the design is still a mess, check the design (see previous issues of the StitchFun News).
