Stitch Length |
|
If you evaluate a design in your embroidery software before test-stitching, you should also check the stitch length. Different software has different capabilities, but if you can select a specific fill area, then check the stitch length, you will learn a lot about the design. For flat fill areas, the stitches should be about 4mm long. If the area uses a fancy fill, the pattern may alternate short and long stitches to create the pattern. In that case, longer stitches are acceptable, up to about 6mm. If you see a stitch that is 10mm or longer, that is too long. For satin stitches, my own preference is to limit stitch length to about 3mm. If the stitches are any longer, they pull so hard on the edges that you get tunneling. An exception would be if there are sufficient underlayment stitches to keep the fabric from distorting. Appliqué edges can be wider, as the extra layer of fabric will keep the stitches from pulling. Running stitches used for outlines should be no more than 2.5mm. Look for nice, even stitches. If your software includes a stitching simulator, you can check that the outline does not double-back repeatedly. These are just general guidelines. Be sure you are not including jump stitches, as these can be any length (since you will be clipping them). Next issue: summer quilting from Mary Jane Allen of Perfect Little Stitches |
