Traveling Laptop

Whenever I take my laptop in the car, I am extra-cautious about security. If the laptop were stolen, not only would I lose the computer, but all the files and programs that are my livelihood. Yes, I have back-up copies, but I would be shut down until I could get a new computer up and running.

Check with your insurance agent to determine what would be covered if your computer is stolen. Would you get full replacement value for the hardware and software? What about all those free designs?

My computer is set up so that windows will not load and the hard drive cannot be accessed unless a series of passwords or fingerprints are entered. No one else can access the files where my tax information is stored (those files are individually password protected). Well, maybe a hacker could get through, but no mere mortal could.

I use a bag that does not look like a computer bag. If I am using the computer in the car, I shut down and slip the computer into the bag long before reaching public parking. The bag slides under a seat.

If I must take dongles when I travel, I store them separately from the computer in a special padded box. When flying, the computer is my carry-on. It's heavy to carry, but not worth getting damaged, lost or stolen with my checked baggage. And of course, I would never ask a stranger to "watch" my computer while I visited the restroom.

Often I sit facing a window while I work at home, but when I walk to the Post Office, I move the laptop away from the window to avoid tempting a passerby. If I leave home for more than a few hours, I hide the computer.

Protect your investment and your privacy, whether traveling or at home.
