Making Liquid Stabilizer |
|
Embroidery sews best on firm fabrics because the stitches cannot distort the fabric. Stretchy or loosely woven fabrics tend to move around as they are embroidered, distorting the design and stretching or pulling on the fabric. This is often the reason that the outline is off. What's an embroiderer to do? Take all those scraps of water soluble stabilizer that you have been saving (in an air-tight container) and make your own liquid stabilizer. Place about 1/4 cup of scraps in a clean glass jar and add a tablespoon of warm water, then stir with a craft stick or a disposable spoon. Add more scraps or water to create a goo that is the consistency of white glue. No lumps, please. Spread a thin even layer of liquid stabilizer over the design area on your fabric. If it is already hooped (with cut-away stabilizer underneath), it will be easier to work with. Allow to dry. If you are in a hurry, you can use a hair dryer to hasten drying. If the fabric is still not as stiff as thin cardboard, apply a second coat of liquid stabilizer. Dry thoroughly before embroidering. Be absolutely sure it is dry. After embroidering, rinse thoroughly. Rinse again until all slimeyness is gone. The fabric should feel supple when dry. Do not iron until the stabilizer is completely rinsed away, as ironing tends to lock it in. You may need to launder the item to completely remove the stabilizer. Or leave it overnight in a crockpot full of water on low heat. Just be sure you wash that crockpot when you are done! To store leftover liquid stabilizer, add a couple drops of rubbing alcohol, then seal tightly and store in the refrigerator. Label with a "Mr. Yuk" face so no one will try to eat it!
