Time for a New Machine? |
|
Even if your machine performs flawlessly, you may be lusting after a newer model with more features. Make a wish list for your perfect machine. Do you want a larger hoop? How big? A color screen? Do you want an embroidery-only model or a combination sewing and embroidery model? What is your budget? Now consider the reality. Will a new machine require new software? How often will you really use that mega-hoop? If the new machine is bigger, will it fit in the same space as your current one? Will your dealer give you fair value if you trade in your older machine or should you try to sell it yourself? If you can afford to keep your older machine, where will you put it? Ask your embroidery friends what they like and dislike about their machines. You can ask on a forum or embroidery email list. Everyone is sure to tell you their machine is best (we like to think we are smart shoppers!). If you are familiar with a particular brand, and have been generally pleased with the machine and your dealer, buying a newer model of the same brand may make the new machine easier to learn. You may even be able to use some of the accessories from your older machine (be sure to ask!). Now that you have done your research, visit your dealer. Have a list of questions on hand. What accessories do NOT come with the machine? Will you need new software? How much will that cost? What are your options for transferring designs to the machine? Does the dealer provide free lessons? Bring some fabric and stabilizer from home to test-stitch a machine. The dealer has special embroidery cloth that makes every machine stitch beautifully, so it's better to use your own. Ask questions. Take your time. This is a large investment and your dealer is making a fine profit, so she should be very willing to help you discover the best machine. You may end up deciding it is the one you have at home!
